Opinion | We Learned to Write the Way We Talk - The New York Times

We need to evolve, of course, but let's not let this dash the English language on the rocks.

Sadly, few people seem to care about the essence of ths story. I do. Thanks for trying, Washington Post.

Seems laudible.

Give us the evidence

Why won't the leadership of the Senate endorse the idea of demanding that the people best able to add more facts to the record be allowed/compelled to appear for the Senate trial of TRUMP?

Opinion | I Headed the F.B.I. and C.I.A. There’s a Dire Threat to the Country I Love. - The New York Times

I don't think this has gotten anywhere near the attention that it and he merit.

Pensacola gunman got around a ban on foreigners buying guns

I cannot come to grips with the notion that someone who is a citizen of another country deserves, only because of that, to be put in a category of holders of lesser rights than the rest of us. For a country supposedly committed to equality for all, why is there a seeming a footnote that reads in part "unless you are non-citizen, in which case you are discriminated against in ways that would never survive 14th Amendment challenge if the case was about US citizens?

Mike Bloomberg to Bloomberg News reporters upset over not being able to probe Democrats: 'With your paycheck comes some restrictions' - CNN

What a jerk; he has now become a stain on the entire election process and our system of freedom of expression. He should just give his money to the Democratic National Committee and shut up.

Israel’s West Bank Settlements Do Not Violate International Law, U.S. to Say - The New York Times

Repulsive action by repulsive people. Such a tragedy that seems never to end, but it will, and it will take decades to recover, I fear.

Poem – I have only just a minute. by Dr. Benjamin E. Mays – Rambling Lisa's Book Reviews

I love this and will always remember Rep Elijah CUMMINGS for it.

Republicans and Democrats

Why doesn't one party or the other - or both - ask all registered voters of that party, individually, to find someone of the other party and just talk with them. Try to understand their view. And then figure out how to collect all of that publicly so we all can better understand what is happening around us. Assign people, give them free choice, allow overlap. Just try to cover everyone and at least try to talk one-on-one with no pressure to succeed but every hope of success in doing so - again, understanding, not persuasion.

Opinion | Cars Are Death Machines. Self-Driving Tech Won’t Change That. - The New York Times

I agree; apply the same line of thinking to guns and you arrive at the same result: we have too many guns in America, too!

Irish politician accused of racism - African asylum-seekers

Those of us who disagree with this thinking need to talk more, speak more convincingly and try to reassemble a compassionate majority of the world in support of asylum claims that are well-founded and surely not defined by any religion.

Trump dismisses idea of allowing Bahamians into U.S. after Hurricane Dorian

TRUMP is such big ass that even the internet is not big enough to embrace it. Why we are not all in the streets demanding his ouster scares me as much as TRUMP does. What's happened to us?

Beto O’Rourke Makes Gun Control a Focus of his Campaign Reboot | Politics | US News

Thank God someone finally willing to say we have too many guns in the U.S. Now he and we need to decide what to do to build upon that base. How many more deaths before we do? It is a giant albatross around all our necks.

'Support Bawnboy' campaign to revitalize small Cavan village

This is a wonderful place!!! My grandfather was born here and I surely hope that they can keep the school's 3 teachers. I would love to live there for some of the year, but I am not what the town needs. They need some young families right now and then let's see what the rest of us can do.

Opinion | The Pain of Losing a Local Record Store - The New York Times

Sure makes sense to me.

But experience has taught me that this cold logic is far from airtight. Our emotional connection to stores, restaurants and other commercial spots whose loss we mourn has nothing to do with economics. These businesses give us the most pleasure because of their irrational exuberance, their daily chutzpah, which is what’s so humanizing about them.

Opinion | We Have Ruined Childhood - The New York Times

I surely agree.

Tali Raviv, the associate director of the Center for Childhood Resilience, says many children today are suffering a social-skills deficit. She told me kids today “have fewer opportunities to practice social-emotional skills, whether it’s because they live in a violent community where they can’t go outside, or whether it’s because there’s overprotection of kids and they don’t get the independence to walk down to the corner store.”

--

Something has to change, says Denise Pope, a co-founder of Challenge Success, an organization based in Palo Alto, Calif., that helps schools make research-backed changes to improve children’s mental health. Kids need recess. They need longer lunches. They need free play, family time, meal time. They need less homework, fewer tests, a greater emphasis on social-emotional learning.

When Cities Try to Limit Guns, State Laws Bar the Way - The New York Times

There is no reason why local governments cannot adopt policies to promote positive actiions. As long as they stop short of imposing laws, requirements, regulations, penalties, etc, what is to stop them? For example, a town policy that says there are too many guns here and we commit ourselves to do all we can to reduce that number.
