Haiti Elections in Doubt as Ex-Presidents Stir Pot - NYTimes.com

I wonder if a similar picture of laundry being delivered to a home in Scarsdale or Larchmont, NY, would label the area a "rich enclave" instead of a "slum". Why use "slum"? Many people there, as elsewhere are very proud of where they live; most aspire to something more, but why not degrade the "filthy rich" as much as the "poor" if some word other than "community" is needed?
